Laser for Hair Removal, Explained

Laser hair removal uses advanced technology to target and destroy hair follicles, preventing future growth. The laser emits light energy that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, converting it into heat. This heat damages the follicle, disrupting the hair growth cycle. Since the laser specifically targets pigment, the treatment is most effective on dark brown or black hair. Lighter hair colors, such as gray, white, or very blonde hair, contain little to no melanin, making them less responsive to laser treatment.

Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser hair removal is only effective during the anagen phase, when the hair is actively growing. Because not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, multiple treatments are necessary. For optimal, long-lasting results, we recommend a series of six sessions per area.

During your laser hair removal consultation, we will assess your skin and hair type, discuss your treatment goals, and explain the laser process in detail. We'll customize a plan to target unwanted hair effectively, ensuring you understand the procedure, expected results, and any pre/post-care instructions for smooth, hair-free skin. Our Process

1. Consultation & Skin Assessment

Avoid sun exposure (including tanning beds and self-tanners) for at least 2 weeks before your appointment. Sun exposure increases the risk of complications like burns or pigmentation changes.

  1. Shave the treatment area 12–24 hours before your appointment.

    • Do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams for at least 4 weeks prior, as the laser targets the hair root, which needs to be intact.

  2. Clean skin only: Arrive with no lotion, oils, makeup, deodorant, or skincare products on the area to be treated.

  3. Avoid active skincare products on the area (like retinoids, glycolic/salicylic acids, benzoyl peroxide, etc.) for 3–5 days prior to treatment.

  4. No antibiotics or photosensitizing medications (oral or topical) for at least 7–10 days prior unless cleared by your provider.

  5. Hydrate! Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session — well-hydrated skin responds better to laser.

  6. Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of treatment to avoid irritation on treated areas.

  7. Let us know if you have a history of cold sores (for facial treatments) or any recent changes to medications or medical conditions.

2. Targeted Laser Treatment

Preparation & Cleansing
Your provider will cleanse the treatment area to remove any oils, lotions, or debris to ensure the laser has clear access to the hair follicles.

  1. Skin Assessment
We’ll assess your skin and hair type, and may adjust laser settings based on your skin tone (Fitzpatrick scale), hair density, and sensitivity.

  2. Safety Gear
You’ll be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser light. Your provider will also wear protective goggles.

  3. Laser Application
The laser handpiece is applied to the skin. It emits light energy that targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle.

  4. Post-Treatment Cooling (if needed)
After the laser is applied, a soothing product, aloe, or cold compress may be used to calm the area and reduce redness.

  5. Duration
Treatment time depends on the area — small areas (like the upper lip) take just a few minutes, while larger areas (like full legs or back) can take 30–60 minutes.

  6. What It Feels Like After
Your skin may feel warm, slightly red, or tingly — similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically resolve within a few hours.

3. Post-Treatment Care and Recovery

Avoid heat for 24–48 hours
No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or intense workouts. Keep the treated area cool to prevent irritation.

  1. Skip sun exposure
Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for at least 2 weeks. Always apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to exposed treated areas.

  2. No picking, scratching, or exfoliating
The skin may feel sensitive or slightly rough. Let shedding happen naturally. Don’t scrub or pick at it.

  3. Moisturize gently
Use a fragrance-free moisturizer (like aloe vera or Aquaphor) to soothe the area if it's dry or irritated.

  4. No waxing, plucking, or tweezing
You can shave between sessions, but avoid removing hair from the root, as the laser needs the follicle intact for future treatments.

  5. Avoid active skincare products
For at least 3–5 days, don’t use retinoids, acids (glycolic, salicylic), or exfoliating scrubs on the treated area.

  6. Mild redness or bumps? Totally normal
These usually subside within a few hours to a day. A cold compress can help reduce inflammation.

  7. Expect shedding
In 5–14 days, you may notice what looks like new hair growth — this is often shedding, not regrowth. It’s a sign the treatment is working.
